What is Universal Design?

Universal Design is a way of planning spaces so they work well for as many people as possible, without special adaptation. It anticipates how people of different ages, sizes, and abilities will actually live in a home or move through a public place.

It isn't a style, a trend, or a checklist of code requirements — it's an approach that starts with the people who will use a space. Small, thoughtful choices made early — a step-free entry, a well-lit hallway, a lever door handle — quietly make everyday life easier for everyone.

Why it matters

Most homes are built for a narrow slice of life. But needs change — a new baby, a sprained ankle, a parent moving in, a knee that no longer bends the way it used to. No one operates at full capability for every task, for their whole life.

When a space is designed for the full arc of life from the start, people can stay in the homes and communities they love — longer, more safely, and with far less costly retrofitting later.

Who it helps

It's a common misconception that Universal Design is only for older adults or people with disabilities. It serves them well — but it helps many more people than that.

It helps the parent carrying groceries and a toddler, the delivery worker with a loaded cart, the neighbor recovering from surgery, and the family that simply wants a home that grows with them. When we design for the widest range of people, everyone benefits.

What it looks like in practice

Universal Design rarely calls attention to itself. Here's how it shows up, room by room.

The Kitchen

  • Single-lever faucets
  • Pull handles instead of knobs on cabinets and drawers
  • Roll-out shelves and drawers in lower cabinets
  • Front-loading appliances at reachable heights
  • Contrasting edges on counters and flooring
  • Clear floor space for easy movement

The Bath

  • Curbless, flush-threshold showers
  • Comfort-height toilets
  • Non-slip flooring
  • A shower seat and hand-held spray
  • Multiple-height vanities with knee space
  • Showers sized for transfer or roll-in

The Whole Home

  • A level, step-free entry
  • Lever door handles
  • Level thresholds and non-slip flooring
  • Light switches and outlets at reachable heights
  • Front-loading laundry appliances
  • Adjustable-height closet shelving

Fall prevention, built in

Falls are among the most common and most preventable injuries at home. Thoughtful design addresses them quietly: even flooring, good lighting, reachable storage, sturdy support where it's needed, and clear paths through every room.

Much of the Coalition's work centers on making these choices a natural part of how homes are designed and remodeled — so safety is built in from the start, not added after something goes wrong.
